There are six main islands in Hawaii. From South to North: Hawaii (the largest one), Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai.
1 Gbps internet speeds are available for 58% of its residents, which is a very good rating considering other US states. All islands have some Internet Service Provider (ISP) offering it, although in Kauai, for example, it is available only at 12% of its addresses.
Overall, Hawaii is the 27th placed state in the United States broadband access list, and has an average download speed of 114 Mbps —not bad, but not outstanding as well.
As in other places, fiber internet connections are still being implemented and are available, nowadays, in over half of the state’s addresses. Again, compared to other places in the country, it is a good rating, actually, more than double the national average.
Around half the state has access to low-price internet plans —those that cost less than $ 60 per month, which is similar to the national average, which stands around 50% as well.
Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) has received, from 2010 to 2015, over $ 4.3 million in federal funds. The objective of the support from the federal government is to help implement the Hawaii Broadband Mapping Project, focused (as the name suggests) on mapping and collecting data from broadband services around the state.
The state has also received around $ 34 million in this period to expand its broadband infrastructure over the islands.
The archipelago state, actually, has 137 volcanic islands and is the only state in the US outside North America —in fact, it is located between North America and Asia, right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In comparison, Cuba is much closer to Washington than Hawaii.
It is home to the famous Pearl Harbor, one of the most important sites of the Second World War.
As it is very isolated from the continent (and, therefore, from the rest of the United States), the state has strong and unique cultural roots. Hawaiian is one of the official languages in the state, alongside English, of course.
The name Hawai comes before “Hawaiʻiloa”. In Hawaiian mythology, it is the figure that discovered the islands.
The island was formed basically by volcanic activity, so it is made much of magma. Until today, there are many volcanoes that create outstanding landscapes in the state.
It is also famous for its very strong surfing culture, an historic trace of local culture that goes much beyond the sport and that you can find even in Disney’s movie, Moana (2016).
From the arive of the Polynesians, 1.500 years ago, Hawaii mixes sea traditions, two different mythologies, music, dance and fests to create an unique place on earth. Each of its islands has its own history. Each of its traditional foods carries its own history.
So let's say “Aloha” (a word that means the spirit of being in the presence of life and sharing the essence of life) to some places in Hawaii that have not only parts of the state's rich culture, but also good internet connections.
