Since we are talking about California...

“Dream of Californication”.

If you have lived the 90’s and the 2000’s, you are familiar with this song.

Red Hot Chili Pepper got the most of the bear state, writing songs about Los Angeles, Hollywood, San Francisco and everything one of the most famous US states has to offer.

As we are talking about California, why don’t we take a deeper look at the cities with the best internet coverage in the state.

Only 36,1% of Californians have access to fiber-optic internet services, but on the other hand, over 95% have access to cable, the second best alternative when it comes to connection.

The state also has the California Emerging Technology Fund dedicated to grant technologic access in the different communities in the state, educating local leaders and improving digital initiatives.

The state is also famous for holding tech giants and, therefore, would not be California without such initiatives.

But it has not only big companies such as Google.

California is home to some of the top universities in the United States, such as Stanford and Berkley, and also hosts some of the most famous tourist attractions in the country, from the family friendly Disneyland to the island of Alcatraz.

It is almost hard to find a place where you will not want to stay in California.

You can find some amazing natural parks, theme parks, golf courses, big museums, top restaurants, great beer and wine, beaches, camps, zoos and lakes, all of that with good internet alternatives for you.

So let's learn more about some important cities in the state and where do they stand regarding internet services.

Los Angeles

The so-called “City of Angels” has a lot of different providers you can choose for your house internet.

Almost every address in the city has access to more than two different providers, so make sure you do a good research before making your choice.

Los Angeles is the 19th most connected in the state of California, but on the other hand, only 37% of its population has access to fiber optic services.

Probably the best deal for you is AT&T and its fiber plans ---however, it is not available everywhere.

Spectrum is also a good choice when it comes to cable internet, with download speeds up to 1,000 Mbps, and a very good price. However, EarthLink also offers fiber services.

If you are in the city, you might also want to take a look at some of the most attractions in it.

One of the largest metropolises in the United States, the city has everything you can imagine, from cultural events to adventure parks, from waterfalls to beaches.

You might want to simply get lost in it and find your way through its streets and incredibles museums, nightclubs for all sorts of music tastes, restaurants, bars and rooftops where you will find amazing skylines.

You can stop at the zoo or the botanical garden, or maybe go whale watching just a few minutes outside the city.

There is a tour only through rooftop bars, or one made by selected beaches. The city also hosts a strong black culture scene and, of course, some amazing rock bands.

And do not forget to look on the web for Los Angeles rock history. If you google it, you will quickly find out many different clubs and music venues that once served as stage for names such as The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Guns N’Roses, U2, Elton John and more

The city also cares for its students and locals business owners, offering programs with free Wi-Fi hotspots in 18,000 spots though Los Angeles and low-income broadband programs.

San Diego

At the margins of the Pacific Ocean, San Diego is also called “The Birthplace of California”, because it was the first site where Europeans settled on the West Coast.

Its “endless” coastline and bay creates one of the most famous landscapes in the world.

It's great for surfing, but also for city activities. And it also has great internet coverage.

As in LA, AT&T tops other providers not only because it offers maximum speed, but mainly because it has a broad fiber coverage.

But if you are considering other options, take a look at EarthLink, which also offers fiber plans and is available almost everywhere in San Diego.

But it is not that easy to find fiber services in the city. Only 32% of residences have access to it, although almost every address has access to at least two internet providers.

For cable services, you will probably get fine with Spectrum or COX --- both offer fast internet, but are not available everywhere.

While you are looking at what provider to choose, you also might want to know a little bit more about the 16th most connected city in California state.

Did you know there are 17 museums just in Balboa Park? The park also hosts the largest koala colony outside Australia and the world’s largest outdoor instrument.

Searching for food will give you joy. One of the city's finest is its fresh fish restaurants, such as Coasterra, Mitch’s Seafood and Royal Rooster.

But since San Diego has strong Spanish and Mexican heritage, the Old Town is a nice place to visit and learn more about history ---or maybe you want to look for the Little Italy neighborhood, where you will find good pasta, cafes and delicious desserts.

Everywhere in the city you will also find free public Wi-Fi spots, offered by the city government.

There are over 300 places (libraries, parks and recreation areas) where you can stay connected and, why not, use it as your workspace for a change.

San Francisco

San Francisco might be small (has no more than 50 square miles) and it also might not be one of the most populous cities in the United States, but it is a rare jewel.

Full of landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Alcatraz prison and Lombard Street, the city has a very strong cultural scene and also hosts top tech companies of the world.

The city is maybe the most important technology hub on Earth today, and started to grow during the internet boom, in the 1990s.

It is home to companies such as Facebook (now called Meta), Google, Apple and Twitter, and you can visit them all and get to know the famous Silicon Valley, where they all are located.

In terms of internet services, it is the 4th most connected city in California state, with 99,7% of it having at least two providers available and almost 60% of its address with access to fiber coverage.

The city stands out for having a lot of providers offering fiber internet, which is not common.

Xfinity stands out with 1,2000 Mbps plans, one of the fastest alternatives everywhere. It loses, however, to the not so broadly available 2,000 Mbps Sonic service.

AT&T is, as in almost all of California, a good choice. Offers good coverage, fast internet and nice prices.

Wave also stands out for having a very cheap fiber plan, but unfortunately it is available only in 2,8% of the city.

If you live in the city and are a sports fan, don’t forget to get a plan where you can watch live streams, because San Francisco is on top of almost every sport in the United States.

The city is today home for the San Francisco Giants, aht the Major LEague Baseball (MLB), and the 49ers atie the National Football LEague (NFL). And do not miss a Golden state Warriors game in the National Basket LEague (NBA).

The city has won almost everything in the past few years. The Giants won the MLB in 2010, 2012 and 2014. The 49ers got defeated at the 2019 Super Bowl, but won the NFC title. Stephern Curry led the Warriors to the top of the NBA in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

If you want to know a little more about the city’s history, it is important to note that it has a strong LGBT scene, with a long history of fight and pride.

The San Francisco Pride parade is one of the biggest in the world and has been held since 1972.

Just don’t forget to bring with you a nice jacket and an umbrella even if it is a sunny day, because the city is famous for its unpredictable weather.
