What is 6G and How Can It Change the Internet?

In October 2020, the Chinese government sent the first 6 satellite to space. As an experiment, the goal is to test how high frequencies (on terahertz spectrum) can accomplish as a connection source for users here on Earth.

Although many people did not manage to understand totally the 5G technology functioning, this test show that the next generation of the internet is already out of paper.

When will it come?

In the next years, the 6G promises to be the leader in mobile internet connections, and the biggest change will be in internet speeds. However, the results of this study are estimated to reach the technological market only by 2030.

The industry, based on what informs the Chinese Science and Technology Department, expects that the sixth generation of wireless services will deliver speeds up to 8.000x faster than 5G, which is currently dominating the market even though many locations do not have access to it yet.

3 main practical purposes of 6g networks

  • Environment Cause: monitoring forest fires and other issues that impact negatively the global climate and threat natural resources.
  • Internet of Things: improve the all-connected systems in households. Other than that, expand the use of connected cars, security systems and other private accessories. By developing this trend, some even expect to live smart cities experiences, in which there is plenty access for wireless services.
  • Sci-fi applications: the computer intelligence is another target here. Human touch, brains and computers integrations and other virtual realities that we often see on movies are privileged when more data and speeds are to come. This can help fasting Health Care and High-Tech projects, for example.

Current dilemmas

One of the major challenges is on the coverage area that the 6G is expected to reach. This happens because the higher the frequencies of a signal, the smaller the territorial area that is able to access it.

Also, in the energy consume perspective, the academic group leading the experiment will have a lot of work ahead. Amplifying the signaling, finding new energy resources and solutions that do not damage the environment are two big goals to properly launch 6G wireless.

By delivering 8k Gigabits per second, which is equivalent of 1 Terabit per second, these services would also shorten the average latency of online connections. This means the time lost in between the signal sent and receival would reach inconsiderable measures.

The bandwidth is also another highlight for the estimated changes 6G can bring. The larger data packages would grow even bigger, and this also implies on a faster connection as more information can be processed by the service in the same giving time.

Therefore, the generations of 6G intend to replace 5G networks basically improving the user experience, leveling speeds up. But, despite of the basic information around the study and the hole 6G development, many certainties still lack.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) took more than eight years to release the standards for the 5th generation of wireless. Even if the majority of people can understand that the 6G is going to be the mobile internet of the future, there are a lot of bureaucratic process to be done yet.
